Background of the Study

Protein is essential for muscle maintenance, especially in older adults who experience age-related muscle loss, known as sarcopenia (Chukwu & Ibrahim, 2024). Adequate protein intake supports muscle strength, mobility, and overall health, reducing the risk of falls and frailty. However, many older adults do not meet their protein requirements due to factors such as reduced appetite, poor dietary choices, and socioeconomic constraints (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2023).

In Benue State, where agriculture is a major economic activity, access to protein-rich foods varies among older adults. This study investigates the relationship between protein intake and muscle mass retention, emphasizing the importance of adequate nutrition for healthy aging.

Statement of the Problem

Many older adults in Benue State experience muscle weakness and frailty, which may be linked to insufficient protein intake. However, there is limited research on the specific dietary protein consumption of this population and its effects on muscle mass retention. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining protein intake levels and their impact on muscle health among older adults.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess protein intake among older adults in Benue State.

  2. To examine the relationship between protein consumption and muscle mass retention.

  3. To recommend dietary interventions for improving protein intake in older adults.

Research Questions

  1. What is the protein intake level of older adults in Benue State?

  2. How does protein consumption affect muscle mass retention among older adults?

  3. What dietary strategies can enhance protein intake and muscle health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Low protein intake is significantly associated with muscle loss among older adults.

  2. Older adults with higher protein consumption retain greater muscle mass.

  3. Dietary interventions can improve muscle retention in aging populations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on older adults in Benue State, evaluating their protein intake and muscle health. Limitations include variations in individual protein metabolism and challenges in accurately measuring dietary intake.

Definitions of Terms

  • Protein Intake: The amount of dietary protein consumed to support bodily functions.

  • Muscle Mass Retention: The maintenance of muscle tissue in aging individuals.

  • Sarcopenia: The age-related loss of muscle mass and strength.
